Mineral segmentation is an equally important and difficult task in the quantification of mineral composition. Difficulties come from process determining boundaries distinctive grains necessary for further analysis identification. Done by hand, very time-consuming higher accuracies are burdened with possible human fatigue factor. The presented method a fully automated solution to problem that uses superpixel approach feature-based merging. validated comparison manual approach. Analyzed data consist photos taken Nikon Eclipse LV100N POL polarizing microscope at 200× magnification, transmitted light, crossed polarizers. Images first prepared Gaussian filter meanshift operations, then initial provided algorithm. Oversegmentation resolved last step consists counting individual grain preparing results as easily readable visual data.
